Sculpture

Sculpture

One of the things that first fascinated me with forging and welding of iron was its strength. How you could draw in three directions in space, in the air. Balance weight was not so important. You could hang things in the air.

Perhaps when I think of working in iron, my mind goes to the wind and to the sea. Smoke drifting up from a candle.

Iron asks the artist to be its partner.

Stained Glass

Stained Glass

Seeing the light from the stained glass spill over the Gothic columns in Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris began my fascination with glass.

My particular interest would be how the light from the window, when used correctly, will wrap itself within the spaces, as sound will do. I love the lead line and its contrast to the clean colors that come from hand-blown glass and the regal nature of glass in contrast to a wall of stone or cement. Also, I love the ability with the use of opaque, textured and clear glass to have a flat surface read as three dimensional. Glass has the ability to express the magical.

Watercolors

Watercolors

It has often seemed to me that beside the light and transparency of watercolors, one of the medium's main fascinations is its similarity to jazz. To exploit it to the maximum, one must work somewhere in the realm of careful planning with a sound fore-thought of theme balanced by an intense awareness and observation of what the paint, water, paper and subject are really doing at that moment.
